Bittergourd --2 big
Tamarind - a medium lemon size
Chilli powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste .
Gingelly oil
Mustard -- 2 tsp
Sambar onions - 1 cup


1) Heat oil .Once hot,add mustard . When it splutters , add chopped onion and saute till transparent .
2) Then add chopped bittergourd (remove the seeds ) .Add little water and cover with a lid .Leave in slow flame,till cooked.
3) Add thick tamarind juice , powders and salt .
4) Then add a spoon of oil and cover with a lid . Remove from the flame when the oil separates and forms thick thokku .

Serve hot with curd rice .

This recipe absolutely delights me. I love bitter gourd and I love it with the combination of tamarind. My mother too is a big fan of bitter gourd.So, I will surely save this recipe to take home with me when I visit India.

Love bittergourd and this looks delicious and the chicken pulikulambu you have in your previous post. I have never tasted chicken and tamarind but I guess why not. Will have to give it a try.

Pickle looks delicious Shama. I use bittergourd while making mixed vegetable thokku. This is pretty much new to me. will try next time cos i am a very big fan of bittergourd

Red Chillies - 25 gms
Coriander seeds - 15 gms
Cumin seeds - 10 gms
Black Pepper- 10 gms
Biriyani Leaf- 3
Cloves - 10 gms
Dried and fried Garlic cloves - 10 nos
Cinnamon sticks - few
Staranise - few
Dried Mint - 5 tsps
Kasthuri Methi - few 
Mustard - 1 tsp
Fennel seeds - 5 gms
Kuskus - 1 tsp


1) Dry fry them one by one and grind them to a fine powder with sufficient salt.
2) Store them in an air tight container.
