Vazhaipoo - - 2 cup
Green chillies - 3
Pearl Onions - 1/2 cup
Mustard,Urat dal --1 tsp each
Curd --2 tsp
Salt to taste and curry leaves
Grated coconut - 2 tbsps
Sambar powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp


1) Wash , clean and chop vazhaipoo and soak in curd mixed water .
2) Meanwhile,heat oil in a pan . Add mustard,urat dal and green chillies . When it splutters,add onion,saute till golden brown.Add curry leaves.
3) Then add vazhaipoo with the curd water . Add Spice powders , salt.Cover with the lid.
4) Cook in medium flame till all the water is drained out and vazhaipoo is well cooked .
5) Finally , add grated coconut and mix it up well .

Serve hot with sambar rice .

Hey I too made vazhaipoo poriyal yesterday Shama :) My method was also similar to yours except I used regular onions instead of shallots. I should try using small onions next time.

Whenever i go to Indian groceries, i pick definitely a banana flower, just love this poriyal, even its really expensive here!
I never prepared anything so far with banana flower..:)looks time i will get n try this poriyal

Hai Shamai love this curry but i dont know how to cook and take the flowers .when ever i go to India my Grandma used to prepare the curry.
This is my fav I love to have this very healthy...

Red Chillies - 25 gms
Coriander seeds - 15 gms
Cumin seeds - 10 gms
Black Pepper- 10 gms
Biriyani Leaf- 3
Cloves - 10 gms
Dried and fried Garlic cloves - 10 nos
Cinnamon sticks - few
Staranise - few
Dried Mint - 5 tsps
Kasthuri Methi - few 
Mustard - 1 tsp
Fennel seeds - 5 gms
Kuskus - 1 tsp


1) Dry fry them one by one and grind them to a fine powder with sufficient salt.
2) Store them in an air tight container.
